Meanwhile, certain health experts and vegan/vegetarian supporters claim that we benefit from small amounts of protein, and any excess is actually harmful to us.

Rarely are answers ever found in the extremes. They do, however, tend to fall between extremes.
You do certainly benefit from consuming a decent amount of protein, but that amount is neither sky-high nor tiny. Get a sensible amount, enjoy the moderate benefits, and keep working hard to make sure the other aspects of your diet and lifestyle are in-tune for your goals.
